Movies to idle Afternoons

There are times when recurrent subjects (in this case passion, love, despair, loss, compulsion, etc) seem to pop up in front of our eyes even when we believe to have buried them deep in the back of our minds. This happened recently when I picked two titles at random to watch. It was a good surprise to see that the comical and thoughtful Wristcutters: a love story was in the Sundance Movie Festival of 2006 and that Christian Slater was back, this time with a great performance in He was a quiet man.
My two recommendations for an idle afternoon.
Any Given Sunday

Sundays can be a great bore but when you have the chance to meet your old high school friends’ things can turn to be pretty good. In my case, it was a surprise meeting some of my buddies and seeing how things changed for all of us after so many years – fifteen since high school and eight since we met for the last time. In a nutshell, it was awkward to be the only single one in the whole party (the idea of not having a conjugal life while all couples mingled around made me feel a little uneasy).
Anyhow, it was good to meet all of them and to think that although I am not married I certainly did a great job knowing myself better in the past eight years. As I told a friend and former professor, harder than living by yourself is to learn to live with your own self - hope this lesson will earn me some points when I feel it is time to tie the knot.
Out in the Web

Not all bloggers have the time and the patience to dig the web looking for interesting blogs to read. To individuals like me writing can be a pretty lonely activity – even though I am aware some good souls stop by from time to time to read my blabbing. However, it is a fact that blogging has been used for the most diverse purposes and it is always good to see people blogging about what really matters: themselves.
In one of my chaotic and non-methodical searches I’ve found the mouth full of skittles, an example that blogging still can be personal and interesting. The intimacy of its posts and the nakedness of words attests that intelligent life still exist scattered around cyberspace.

Governance, Democracy and Online Videos in Cyberspace
Posted on June 22, 2008 - Filed Under Blog, Internet, Japan, Marketing, Opinion, Personal, Review, Video, 日本 | Leave a Comment
Once upon a time there was a website that offered an alternative of quality to uploading and watching movies. This site was an option to users that did not like the hegemony (and also the quality) played by Youtube in the world of online video sharing. Unfortunately when trying to upload a video I got the following message:

It seems executives from Veoh are not so interested in discussing governance and democracy in cyberspace, illustrating that geographical, political, religious or economical difference can impose barriers to the free access to information in the World Wide Web. This is just one example of censorship applied not only to Brazil but to other 164 countries around the planet. Simply like that, users had the access to their accounts blocked and not a single word explaining the reasons behind it. Once more, the truculence of companies that insist in limiting the free circulation of information in the cyberspace comes to the surface, a good opportunity to keep all of us aware of the future possibilities. A future that may not be so bright to an Internet with information and communication on-demand controlled not only by the payment of fees but also by the arbitrary policy of companies. Shame that subjects like democracy and governance in cyberspace are not broader discussed.
Shame on you Veoh and all your executives that still see the world upwards.
Individuality

There is something on me more than body. Something that occupies the tiny spaces between the flesh and this higher state of conscience also known as mind. I am more than just chemical reactions, more than synapses connecting and colliding in the microscopic cosmos of my brain. I am the structure of choices created within the infinitesimal and yet measurable genetic material that once belonged to somebody else. I am (and we all are!) the most improbable of the mathematical equations. I am life and so are you, unique in existence and relevant because of the little things that help building the whole.
